POSITION DESCRIPTION:  ACOUSTIC MODELER

Marine Acoustics, Inc. (MAI) is seeking an Acoustic Modeler and Analyst to assist us in the analysis of underwater acoustic system performance and the effect underwater acoustic transmissions have on the marine environment and biota. Our Environmental Program and sonar analysis teams consists of marine mammal bioacousticians, sonar acoustic analysts, ocean engineers, and biological oceanographers who work together in a collaborative environment to support diverse marine projects.

Primary responsibilities and tasking:

  • Conduct underwater acoustic propagation modeling using industry/Navy standard propagation models
  • Conduct animat and acoustic propagation modeling using MAI’s Acoustic Integration Model (AIM)
  • Conduct active and passive acoustic sensor performance modeling using measured or modeled oceanographic data and sensor characteristics
  • Assess, visualize, and interpret model results and conduct post-processing analysis
  • Prepare and edit technical summary reports
  • Contribute to the further development, maintenance, and expansion of MAI’s underwater acoustic modeling procedures and associated analysis code
  • Participate in client-related meetings

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Ocean Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or another related discipline with relevant experience or coursework in underwater acoustics modeling approaches
  • Strong MATLAB programming skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance; eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship
  • Ability to work independently

Additional desired requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in the field of underwater acoustics
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in developing underwater acoustic system performance models and comparing model outputs to data
  • Familiarity with acoustic source and receiver technology
  • Experience with high-performance computing
  • Experience with software development best practices

Job Location: In-person at MAI’s facilities (Middletown, RI; Arlington, VA; or Gales Ferry, CT) or possible option of remote work.
