MAI plays a key role supporting Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport in Developmental Testing of submarine sonar systems for the Submarine Acoustic Systems Program Office (PMS-401). MAI assists the preparation of Test and Evaluation Master Plans (TEMP), prepares the measurement and analysis plans and address the details of measurement and analysis methodologies, develops analytic tools to be used in the analysis, supports the execution of testing by providing observers and test directors, and conducts analyses of the measurements leading to reports on the system performance and compliance with metrics. MAI provides the technical expertise to develop a test design accounting for the functions of the capabilities under test, the role these capabilities play in affecting overall system level performance, the factors affecting the ultimate performance observed, and the samples sizes to achieve the level of accuracy necessary to assess the adequacy of system performance.
MAI applies an in-depth understanding of submarine sonar operations, the operational environment, the physics affecting performance and system processing design in designing and executing testing and assessing test results. Testing involves both in-plant and at-sea measurements. In-plant measurements involve both the use of synthetic stimulation of the system and reprocessing of sonar array element level data recorded at-sea. The scope of these results include not only the specific metrics specified in the TEMP but also any additional measures that lend insight into the performance of the particular capability under test. MAI is a principal in compiling and documenting analysis results into the classified Developmental Testing briefings and reports. MAI personnel often brief these results to the PMS-401 and other U.S. Navy organizations involved in submarine sonar development.
